A Sneak Peek Into CJ's Book, "MORE THAN"
As a child I had a lot going on in my head, not unlike most children. Yet, the challenges I faced, or didn't face, often lead to the usual labels.
Despite my IQ tests, I was ridiculed for not being more focused, reprimanded for being easily distracted, singled out in class for being a poor reader, called stupid for not retaining information, told repeatedly by adults in my life that "if you would just try harder" I would solve a lot of my problems and achieve "MORE".
Taking their advice I worked "harder" with little improvement. It wasn't until my mid 20's that a professional validated that I was not in fact incapable of learning what others could. Instead, I had to be taught how to organize my thoughts in a way that would allow me to accept and store new information. As freeing as it was to be seen differently, and to some degree even understood for the first time...I now got to try on a new label...A.D.D.
Little did everyone know, including myself, that the label that I should have been assigned was PTSD.
From my experience, I vowed as a young adult that I wouldn't assign negative labels. I wouldn't close my mind to who someone was, and could be. I wouldn't under estimate the reason for someone's distractions or under value another's process. I wouldn't assume to know someone, without actually getting to know them.
I would, however, find ways to offer others more understanding, acceptance and support and ultimately love them unconditionally.
I was true to my personal vow, to a fault...and learned a lot in the process. I now know...when committing to a vow, or wish, that you have to be very specific or you will most definitely set yourself up to fail. Vows, just like your choice of spiritual guide (universe included)...have a profound sense of humor and love to challenge you to be "MORE THAN" what you or anyone else may label you.
